This Baby Gorilla Decided His Mom Had Slept Enough. She Felt Differently, But That Didn’t Matter Much…
I love watching baby apes. They are so human-like in their interactions with their mothers and the other members of their groups that they get me hypnotized. Even their facial expressions are human baby-like. It is simply incredible.
A perfect case in point is the awesome scene that you are about to witness. It was captured by photographer Alan Shapiro at Bronx Zoo in New York on Sunday. It shows Julia the gorilla taking a well-deserved nap when her four-month-old baby decided that she’d had enough and it was time to play. The baby proceeded to touch her face and tug on her ears and anything it could take hold of.
Poor Julia voiced her disagreement, but unfortunately for her sleeping was no longer an option. Mr. Shapiro explained what he saw:
1. A baby gorilla tries to wake its mother up so she will play with it.

2. A four-month-old baby gorilla at Bronx Zoo, New York, USA, was pictured trying to wake up its napping mother Julia, a 33-year-old lowland gorilla.

3. Photographer Alan Shapiro said: ‘When he first touched her face, she didn’t respond so he touched her again. He was nuzzling her to get her to wake up’.

4. In scenes most new parents will relate to, the mother is woken by her baby just as she tries to get some much-needed shut-eye.

5. Photographer Alan Shapiro said the adorable scenes made onlookers sigh because the pair were so cute.

6. In March this year Julia, a 33-year-old lowland gorilla, gave birth to the first gorilla to be born in the zoo since 2006.

7. Gorilla infants are held by their mother for the first four months of their life, but will nurse until they are three or four years old.

And here is the video, which was taken right after Julia gave birth:

I had just arrived at the gorilla enclosure and the mother gorilla, Julia, had lain down to take a nap. The baby was resting against her.The baby, who was born in March, is as of yet nameless. Mr Shapiro added:
The baby wanted to play, so he got up and moved around – then he reached out and touched her face. Everyone watching let out a sigh, we all thought it was so cute. He just wanted to play.
When he first touched her face he sat and waited for her to wake up, she didn’t respond so he touched her again with both hands. He was nuzzling her and kissing her on the forehead trying to get her to wake up.Amazing scene! (Scroll down for the video.)
It was one of the most adorable things I have ever seen — it was so human-like. It was one of those magic moments when you realize how similar we are to primates.
